Being Human

This morning, I had the most peculiar realization about being human.

We struggle so much to understand ourselves, classifying our feelings and emotions as right or wrong, training ourselves to be better, more, or just different to be productive, focused, and a good person.

But we forget that it is our nature, as sentient beings, to have feelings and emotions that are not always pleasant. When we feel sadness, sorrow, despair, anger, and anxiety, we try very quickly to get rid of them as uninvited guests who don’t belong in our presence. But what if we are not broken? What if those unpleasant feelings and emotions are what make us humans? What if a broken heart is what makes us realize and appreciate the vast capacity for love, compassion, and care?

Uninvited guests may deserve our full attention since they might be trying to tell us something important that is missing in our lives. Will we listen?
